Scafell Pike via the Corridor Route This route describes the most popular route up to the summit, starting at Seathwaite in the Borrowdale valley. Ill Crag is one of the peaks in the Scafell range, the third tallest after Scafell Pike and Scafell. Ill Crag may be climbed en route to Scafell Pike, via a path from Esk Hause, but it is commonly passed by without going to the actual summit, which is rocky making progress slow. Scafell Pike at 3210ft/978m is the highest mountain in England and on this walk we climb to the summit via the beautiful Grains Ghyll path, Esk Hause and the mountains long North Eastern flank. Our route today was 'South east face of Ill Crag' (grade 2/3) around 300m of vertical height gain, which makes it one of the longest scrambles in the Lakes. Seven climbers on the crag. I took advantage of the conveniently placed public toilets on the farm, then headed out on what Wainwright described as the finest route up to Scafell Pike – that via Grains Gill to Esk Hause, then on past Great End and over Ill Crag and Broad Crag, before finally reaching the roof of England.
